Thales

In-flight gets personal with Platinum Sky.

In-flight infotainment start screen experience.

Flying today is like time travel. In-flight entertainment feels generic and dated. So when French aerospace giant Thales wanted to change that, they turned to my team at Native Design.

Background

Native Design embarked on an extensive research endeavor, consulting experts and drawing from our own travel experiences to identify the shortcomings of existing in-flight entertainment systems. My team and I aimed to create an interface which would rival the personalization and convenience offered by smartphones. The question arose: What if the screen in your seat could be as personal as the phone in your pocket?

Approach

As the project lead, I assumed a pivotal role in guiding the development of INFLYT 360. This involved conducting stakeholder workshops to align objectives, driving user experience exploration, overseeing design, and liaising with client teams. Throughout the intense six-month project, the team not only gained invaluable insights into the travel sector but also honed their expertise in design thinking with machine learning, to really bring the vision to life.

Solution

After weeks of meticulous planning and design, my team at Native Design unveiled INFLYT 360—a portal which harnesses the power of machine learning to learn and adapt to the unique habits, preferences, passions, and destinations of individual travelers. For prototyping purposes we our travelers were bound for Paris. This technology enables the delivery of tailored, personalized content during flight.

Passengers can now access recommendations such as the best sushi spots in Montmartre, hidden gems of street art locations, or even expertly paired wines for their in-flight meals. To enhance personalization further, passengers can integrate their own devices or sync their profiles from popular platforms like Netflix and Spotify.

Results

Originally envisioned as a concept, INFLYT 360 quickly garnered attention from Thales, who recognized its immense business potential. The project evolved into the creation of three fully functional prototypes, culminating in a flagship exhibit at a prominent aircraft design expo.

With its resounding success, INFLYT 360 is now poised to be implemented on a wider scale, soon to be featured on a small screen near you.

Conclusions

The collaboration between Thales and Native Design has yielded a groundbreaking solution which reinvents the in-flight entertainment experience. INFLYT 360 offers passengers a personalized and immersive journey. By tailoring content to individual preferences and seamlessly integrating with popular platforms, my team at Native Design has set a new standard in in-flight entertainment.
